Almeria: Mirror of the Sea

The word Almeria is an Arabic word which means mirror of the sea. This city was actually an additional stop to our trip. As the distance between Seville and Murcia-San Javier Airport was too far to be done in one day, we decided to stay overnight in here. We were glad we did! This coastal city was quieter than the neighbour city Malaga and it’s surprisingly beautiful!

Daaan ternyata kotanya bagus, we were glad we did!

The Alcazaba of Almeria

Almeria gained the title of medina or “city” in 955 by the Caliph of Cordoba, Abd ar-Rahman III and the construction of the defensive citadel began in this period. Later on, it was completed by Hayran, “taifa” king of Almeria. Provided not only with walls and towers but also with squares, houses and a mosque, the alcazaba was also the seat of the local government, commanding the city and the sea nearby.

The Alcazaba of Almeria is the second largest Moorish fortress in Spain. Catastrophic earthquakes in the 16th century left little of the original Alcazaba, but it was beautifully reconstructed with walls and towers, gardens, ornamental pond, fountains, and former palace; and they are enough to evoke grand former days.

The Alcazaba of Almeria merupakan benteng Moor terbesar kedua di Spanyol.

The Beach

I’m not actually sure what’s the name of this beach but it’s the one nearby the train station. As it was still freezing back in Amsterdam, we took our last chance to enjoy the sun while eating our paella by the beach.

As soon as we finished our lunch, we headed back to airport to catch our evening flight. We arrived in Amsterdam some time before midnight and I remember it was snowy on that day. Rizky started his internship the next day and Agung went back to Indonesia for good a few weeks later. What a trip!

What a trip!
