Road Trip in Andalusia: What to Expect

Traveling around Andalusia, Southern Spain, has been on my wish list since years ago. It was on my “wish” list because I didn’t expect to go there anytime soon. One day, after Rizky had finished his exams and before he started his internship, we got a week of free time with no plan whatsoever. The idea of visiting Andalusia came out quite suddenly. It took us less than an hour to decide and to buy a return ticket. We also asked Agung, Rizky’s friend, made some reservations, and did some research about Andalusia – as we only got two days to prepare!

As this was a historical trip, I did quite a bit of reading about the history of each place we’d visit and watching some documentary films about the history of Islam in Spain. I can’t stress enough how important this stage is, as the explanation given on each site was far from enough.

We flew from Amsterdam to Murcia as it was the cheapest route available at that time (fyi: RyanAir has just launched Amsterdam-Malaga route, closer to other big cities in Andalusia). At first, we planned to use public transport (bus/train). However, it turned out that the cost of using public transport (for 3 people) was similar to the cost of renting a car. We decided to rent a car for the flexibility it would provide.

There are some car rental companies in Murcia (and pretty much the same in other cities), including Europcar, Avis, and Goldcar. I personally used Goldcar. Whatever your choice is, there are some things to keep in mind:

Kebetulan saya pake Goldcar. Berikut beberapa hal yang perlu diperhatikan:

  • They do accept Indonesian Driving Licence (or any other local driving licence, with some conditions – please do check)
  • There’ll be additional charge for driver under the age of 26 (this applies no matter which company you choose).
  • It’s better to book a car with a full-to-full fuel policy: as long as you refill the tank just before the end of the rental, you won’t pay additional fuel charge. If you return a car with less fuel than it previously has, the corresponding amount will be charged and it costs around twice as much as fair price.
  • Although the website already written “include insurance”, keep in mind that it’s a Partial Damage Cover (CDW) with excess. I would say this insurance doesn’t cover anything apart from car breakdown. This doesn’t include things like collision or vandalism. At this point, they will give you 2 options: Full Insurance or deposit; and you MUST select one of these
    • Full Insurance/Total Relax Insurance: around €15-25 day (depends on how long you rent the car for). If you select this option at the time of your booking (i.e. via website) there won’t be any administration fee. You will be charged administration fee, however, if you choose this option at the airport.
    • Deposit of €1100 and administration fee will also be charged.
  • You need to be very careful if you choose the second option. Since they will try to retain the deposit money as much as they could, even a hairline damage could cost you €200. (I’m not surprised though, as Goldcar is a low-cost car rental, I suppose this is the way they earn money)

    • Full Insurance/Total Relax Insurance: sekitar €15-25 per hari (tergantung seberapa lama sewa mobil). Kalo dari awal booking (via website) udah bilang mau full insurance, gak akan dikenakan biaya administrasi. Tapi kalo awalnya gak bilang, akan dikenakan lagi biaya administrasi sebelum serah terima kunci.
    • Deposit: €1100 dan akan dibalikin setelah di cek. Plus biaya administrasi.
  • Perlu sangat hati-hati kalau misalnya gak ambil full insurance.

We chose Goldcar because it’s cheaper than others. The car was quite new with good condition. I would suggest anyone using the total relax insurance to avoid confusion over deposits.

From Murcia, we drove straight to Granada. The next morning, we went to Alhambra and did some sightseeing afterwards. We spent the rest of the evening in Malaga, and the morning after we went to Cordoba then to Sevilla.

Initially, we planned to end this trip in Sevilla and went straight back to Murcia. However, considering the distance between both cities, we thought it would be wise to stay overnight in Almeria. We’re glad we did! And I just realised that Almeria was also used as the Game of Thrones filming locations!

We’re glad we did! Bahkan saya baru ngeh kalo Almeria juga dipakai sebagai lokasi syuting Game of Thrones!
