Bergen: The City of Seven Mountains

I haven’t got much time either while I was in Bergen. I spent two nights but only got one full day to travel around the city. As my main intention was to enjoy the view, I didn’t go to any museum and enjoyed the ambience of the city instead.

This is definitely the first thing you need to do in the morning. Why? Because the queue will be very busy a few hours after the opening time. The opening hours is 7.30 AM (weekdays) or 8.00 AM (weekends).

When I got here, about 15 minutes before the opening time, there were some people who have bought the ticket already. Luckily, I still got the chance to go up by the first funicular. Note that the funicular runs every half an hour, and every 15 minutes from 10.00 AM.

Pas saya sampe disini, sekitar 15 menit sebelum jam buka, udah ada beberapa orang yang udah membeli tiket. Untungnya, saya sempet naik dengan kereta pertama. Perlu diingat kalo keretanya naik setiap setengah jam, dan setiap 15 menit kalo udah jam 10.00 pagi.

One of the perks of catching the first funicular is you got the whole area by yourself (and a few others). You can enjoy the view of Bergen from up here. Other option if you don’t want to take the funicular is by hiking. The Floyen viewpoint is only over 300m so it won’t take long to go here from the city centre, about less than an hour. From here, you can either continue to hike to Mt. Ulriken or back to city centre.

After about an hour, I went back to city centre. There were some buses nearby the station and the queue line for taking the funicular up to Floyen was crazy. This is why you need to go as early as possible if you’d like to take the funicular.

Bryggen

The UNESCO world heritage listed the area of Bryggen is entirely constructed from wood, which means that these houses are flammable (the most recent fire was in 1955).

The good thing is, every time any building was rebuilt, it has traditionally followed old patterns and methods, thus leaving its main structure preserved. So you can get a taste of 600-year-old history although the buildings aren’t that old.

Fish Market

Located right at the city centre, the Fish Market sells seafood, fruit, and veggies. It’s nice to see, but I must say that the foods are overpriced. I was so hungry I decided to buy a plate of seafood. As soon as I’ve finished the meal, I went to supermarket to buy salmon and cooked it by myself.

Mt. Ulriken

After walking around the city and taking rest for a while, I changed my shoes and headed to Mt Ulriken, the highest of the seven mountains around Bergen. The easiest option is to go by tourist bus; or you can also take public Bus No.2 or Bus No.3 nearby Bryggen, stop at Haukeland hospital, and take a 5-minute walk to the cable car station – which I did. I bought one-way ticket only and planned to walk down.

From here, you can see the whole city of Bergen, the harbour, and the surrounding mountains.

There are several different trails to go down from Mt Ulriken. The staff at cable car station recommend me to take “the very left” way, with a quite long handgrip along the path – perfect for beginner. I somehow felt challenged, decided to take another path. No regret.

It’s funny how sometime I thought I was lost or taking a wrong way, because it wasn’t seemed to be a trekking path (may be it was, but I wasn’t an experienced hiker). Luckily, I always met someone who hiked up, then I knew I was in the right track hahaha. After about an hour, I finally saw a road!

Setelah sekitar satu jam, akhirnya saya sampe dibawah!

Actually I had a plan to have a dinner with Lisa, Joana, and Christina; but I was toooo tired to do anything later that evening. So I went straight back home. The morning after, I flew to Stockholm at noon so there wasn’t anything special, except for the view when I was on my way to airport.
